What we do

At the Oakland County Fire Department (OCFD), we are dedicated to protecting life, property, and the environment through rapid emergency response, fire suppression, rescue operations, and medical aid across Nova State and Oakland County. Whether it’s battling intense structure fires, responding to hazardous material incidents, or providing critical care in life-threatening situations, our department is trained and equipped to handle it all.

We operate 24/7 with a team of highly skilled firefighters, EMTs, and command staff committed to professionalism, safety, and service. Our units respond to a wide range of emergencies, including but not limited to:

• Structural and wildland fires
• Vehicle accidents and extrications
• Medical emergencies (BLS/ALS support)
• Hazardous materials containment
• Search and rescue operations
• Public safety support during large-scale incidents

OCFD is more than just an emergency service — we are a cornerstone of the community. How we operate

The Oakland County Fire Department functions as a well-coordinated, mission-driven emergency response team with a focus on safety, speed, and professionalism. Our operations are built around a structured command hierarchy, rigorous training, and efficient deployment of resources across the State.

All Incidents are reported via 911 calls to Dispatch, the operator then comes onto our radio and addresses Station Command regarding the incident. Unit(s) are then assigned to the call based on severity, location, and availability. Whether it’s a medical emergency, a car crash, or a fully engulfed structure fire, our personnel respond immediately — lights on, sirens wailing, ready for action.

Our Emergency Response apparatuses include the following:

• Engine - Meant for any call, Fire, Rescue or Medical Call.
• Rescue - Meant for Technical or normal Rescues, Medical Calls and may assist with Fires.
• Truck - Truck is meant for structure fires, typically comercial so our crews can reach to evacuate and extinguish skyblazes.
• Basic Life Suppurt - Meant for basic Medical Calls where the patient is not in serious condition and just needs basic support.
• Advanced Life Support - Meant for advanced Medical Calls where the patient may be loosing major blood, shot or severely injuried.
• All Terrain Vehicles - These apparatuses would be used for technical rescues where the victim may be stranded in a cavern, the park or any place normal apparatuses are unable to go.
• Tanker & Heavy Tanker - These apparatuses are meant for fires in rural areas where engines would not have enough water to extinguish the fire completely.
• Hazmat Apparatuses - Meant for hazardous situations where it is unsafe for regular fire crews to go.

Our Fire stations serve as Community hubs, training grounds, and safe havens for the crew. During downtime, crews clean and maintain gear, review SOPs, and train for high-risk and low-frequency incidents so they're ready to handle it when they come. From truck checks to community events, the work never stops — even between calls.

Joining OCFD isn’t just about putting on a uniform — it’s about becoming part of a close knit family committed to saving lives, serving the community, and operating at the highest standard in every situation.

Requirements:

• Functioning microphone.
• 14+ Years Old
• Proper Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar (SPaG).
• Willing to acheive the presented quota.
• Professional, kind, considerate and honest.

Application Process:

• Self Guided Study - Each cadet will have access to training material. During this 1 Week phase you will have plenty of time to get to know basic operations.
• Examination - After the first week, Cadets will be provided with an examination link where Field Training Officers will mark and assess the knowledge you have obtained.
• Ride-Along - After the successful completion of the examination, cadets will have to attend a ride-along with a certified Field Training Officer.

During the 2 week Academy process, you will learn the following:

• Firefighting operations and tactics.
• Basic medical, how to perform it.
• How to be a team player and working with others.
• Rescue operations, how to safely perform extrications.

Fire Investigations Division

Become part of an elite investigative team trained to determine the origin and cause of suspicious or accidental fires. Work alongside command staff to document scenes, interview witnesses, and bring clarity and justice to fire incidents. Fire Investigators play a key role in prevention and accountability.

Wild Lands Division

When fires spread into Nova State's forests and rural areas, our Wild Lands Division steps up. Trained in wildfire behavior, containment strategies, and specialized equipment, these firefighters handle fast-moving brush fires and remote access emergencies with precision and courage.

Medical Certifications

From Basic Life Support (BLS) to Advanced Life Support (ALS), we offer in-depth EMS training and certification tracks for those interested in medical response. Learn to stabilize patients, administer treatments, and provide top-tier care during emergencies. EMS personnel are vital on nearly every call.

Continous Training Opportunities and Personal Development
